More about Malibu Third Point
Third Point features fast-breaking rights and lefts over a cobblestone reef with sand overlay, sitting in 3–5 meters of water at the outer section of the point. It responds to southwest and west swells in the 1–3.6 meter range, with northwest to north-northwest wind preferred, particularly during spring and summer. The break attracts shortboarders seeking the fastest, most performance-oriented wave in the Malibu stretch, with sessions often better in afternoon hours (2–5 PM) when larger swells fill in.
The Malibu points became formalized as a historical surfing site in 2018 when the State of California designated them as the Malibu Historic District, recognizing wave-riding activity dating to the 1930s. Third Point gained wider use among advanced surfers during the 1970s and 1980s, positioning itself within the broader evolution of modern surfing that took root at Malibu in the postwar decades.
Access is via Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu Pier, with entry through the lagoon area; parking is limited to signed roadside bays. The break attracts experienced riders and an assertive local crew.
