More about Mag Bay
Mag Bay features multiple right-hand point breaks working primarily on southern and southwestern swells during the spring through fall months. The main breaks include Campsites, a 400-yard reeling point that produces head-high waves and longer rides, and Cuevas, a right reef that breaks on almost any southern swell. The waves are characteristically mellow and forgiving, making the area well-suited to beginner and intermediate surfers. Offshore northeast winds provide clean conditions, and the area rarely experiences crowds despite consistent swell availability.
Access to Mag Bay requires reaching an offshore island located within a protected Mexican ecological reserve. The journey begins with a flight to Loreto, followed by a three-hour van transfer to Puerto San Carlos. From there, a boat ride crosses Magdalena Bay, which includes an unusual overland transport via sandspit where surfers remain in their boats while being towed across sand, before a final 45-minute open-ocean panga ride to the camp. The location itself has no road access or settlements, operating as a dedicated surf camp that books at full capacity year-round.
I found limited documentation of historical surf sessions, notable competitions, or renowned surfers specifically associated with Mag Bay, suggesting the break has developed primarily as a modern destination rather than a spot with established surf heritage.
