More about Los Frailes

Los Frailes is a left reef break over an uneven reef bottom, working consistently when southeast swell reaches the East Cape. The wave develops best between 2 and 8 feet and favors northwest wind to clean up the face; it works across all tidal stages. Intermediate surfers find it manageable, though the uneven reef requires respect for the seafloor. July offers the most reliable conditions with consistent clean waves; autumn and winter bring distant groundswells, though the spot depends heavily on large southeast swell direction to generate rideable surf.

The East Cape area around Cabo Pulmo was discovered by surfers in the 1970s, but Los Frailes itself does not feature prominently in documented surf history or major competitions. The broader Cabo region saw early activity in the 1950s from traveling California sailors and fishermen, with later development through the 1960s and 1970s, but no notable sessions or competitions are recorded specifically for this break.

Los Frailes sits at the southern edge of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, accessed by a 5–6 kilometer continuation down the East Cape Road from the main Cabo Pulmo area. Parking is free directly on the sandy beach, but the access road is uneven dirt with soft sand patches that can trap small rental vehicles, making night travel risky. The beach itself is a long sandy bay with seasonal fishermen's shelters in winter and light crowds. Bull sharks, tiger sharks, and hammerheads (particularly April through June) inhabit the waters; the beach has no lifeguards.
