More about Leo Carrillo

Leo Carrillo is a right-hand point break that peels off Sequit Point's cobblestone and rock foundation, with an inside section dropping into sand. Waves here are generally forgiving on smaller south-swell days and suitable for longboards, but winter northwest to west-northwest swells bring more powerful, faster faces that demand intermediate skill. The break is tide-dependent and performs best around mid-tide on a rising tide with north wind offshore.

The confined takeoff area can only accommodate about six paddlers comfortably, making it significantly crowded when conditions align during summer months when south and southwest swells are most consistent. The spot receives year-round attention from local surfers despite its limited capacity. Rocks at the point, sea urchins, and rip currents are recurring hazards, and the wave's performance relies heavily on tidal stage.

Leo Carrillo State Park surrounds the break at 35000 West Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Access is via a tunnel beneath the highway from the main parking area, which charges twelve dollars for day-use or three dollars per hour. Free parking exists along the shoulder of PCH to the west, though this requires steep trails or a lengthy staircase descent to reach the beach.
