More about Leffingwell Landing
Leffingwell Landing is a right-hand reef break with a rock bottom that breaks over extended stretches—up to 200 meters when conditions align. It works best with west-northwest swell combined with easterly offshore wind, producing waves between chest-high and double overhead. The break requires substantial winter swell to produce rideable conditions consistently, and notably, tide has minimal influence on its quality. Intermediate to advanced surfers tackle this wave, which tends to section and can be tricky. The reef itself is infrequent—averaging a 3/10 reliability rating—making active sessions somewhat rare despite the fact that surfers show up regularly when it does work.
Leffingwell Landing sits at the north end of Moonstone Beach in Cambria, accessed via Moonstone Beach Drive. The location is a day-use area managed as part of Hearst San Simeon State Park, offering a boat ramp, restrooms, picnic tables, and coastal trails with ocean overlooks. The rocky terrain around the break requires reef shoes or booties for paddling out. Sharks and rocks are noted hazards, and the spot sees moderate crowds when the swell cooperates.
