More about Le Virage
Le Virage is a hybrid beach and reef break where a sandy bottom mixed with scattered rocks hosts both left and right-hand waves. The spot responds best to northwest swell with south-southeast winds providing the ideal offshore conditions, and it works across all tidal stages. Autumn and early winter offer the most consistent swell, particularly September through March when north Atlantic groundswells deliver waves in the 2–10 foot range.
The break is beginner-accessible with gradual water entry and moderate wave heights that make it a popular spot for inexperienced surfers and longboarders alike. Rocks present a hazard, and crowds tend to build during good conditions, particularly on weekends.
Located on the Almadies peninsula roughly 5–10 kilometers northwest of central Dakar, Le Virage is close enough to the city's airport that surfers passing through can catch an easy session before or after travel. A local surf shop operates nearby, and the beach area includes restaurants and basic facilities.
