More about Law Street
Law Street is a shifting beach break with soft, forgiving waves that rarely exceed one meter and work best during west swell aligned with east-northeast offshore winds. The sandy bottom and gradual seafloor slope make it notably gentler than adjacent breaks to the south. While the spot is quite temperamental and remains unrideable much of the year, winter conditions—particularly January—produce the most consistent rideable conditions. Hazards beyond the noted crowds include rocks and occasional stray boards.
The area began development in the early 1900s as part of Pacific Beach's coastal community, but did not emerge as a known surfing destination until the 1960s. The break has maintained a laid-back, locally-rooted character over subsequent decades, with a welcoming atmosphere that draws surfers of various skill levels rather than the more competitive lineup found closer to Crystal Pier.
Law Street sits north of Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach proper, with free street parking typically available on nearby side roads—making access easier and less frustrating than central Pacific Beach options. The beach remains quieter than its busy southern neighbor despite proximity to shops and restaurants, which helps explain its appeal to beginners seeking space to practice.
