More about Las Islitas

Las Islitas is a right point break over rock that produces long, mellow waves suitable for learners. The bay breaks best on south swells combined with northeast offshore winds, typically from summer through early autumn with September being the most consistent month. The waves are characteristically small and break in shallow water, making this an accessible location for instruction. South-southwest swell dominates the region, though the bay only develops rideable waves during the largest swells of the season. Primary hazards include submerged and exposed rocks, rip currents, and sharks common to the region.

Las Islitas holds the Guinness World Record for the longest surfable wave at approximately 5,700 feet. Local surfers have historically reported segments of a quarter to half mile occurring regularly, though the construction of jetties has altered the wave mechanics compared to earlier decades. The point wraps into Matanchén Bay with a geography that once produced exceptionally extended rides.

Access to Las Islitas is from San Blas, located about 7 kilometers south via paved road toward Tepic and then a dirt turnoff east to the beach. The village of Matanchén sits between the highway and the break. Street parking is available at the beach entrance with no formal parking area. A high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 truck is recommended for exploring further along the point toward Stoner's Point, though a regular car can reach the main beach area. The location functions primarily as a family beach with calm, shallow conditions offshore.
