More about Las Gaviotas

Las Gaviotas is a soft right-hand reef break that produces long, fast rides and works reliably across a range of swell directions, though west swell with northeast offshore wind delivers the best conditions. The wave reaches double overhead on strong days and can be surfed at any tide, making it a consistent option during autumn and winter months, particularly from January onward. It suits both longboarders and intermediate surfers seeking mellow, predictable waves.

The spot exists within Ensenada's broader surf heritage, a region recognized as the birthplace of organized Mexican surfing dating to at least the 1960s. While Las Gaviotas itself has limited documented competitive history, it has become established as the preferred mellow-wave destination for longboard-oriented surfers in northern Baja.

Access requires special permission and presents a real constraint rather than a minor inconvenience. The break sits within a private, gated residential community with 24-hour security located roughly 35 minutes south of the U.S. border. Only residents, their guests, or visitors with explicit approval from property owners or community administration can enter. Beyond access restrictions, the water features sharp rocks and sea urchins, and currents can pose hazards to less-experienced swimmers.
