More about Lakey Peak

Lakey Peak is a steep A-frame reef break that peels left and right from a central peak, fast and hollow across both directions. The left runs longer with consistent barrel sections, while the right throws backdoor tube rides when the swell angle favors it but becomes dangerously shallow at low tide. The reef is sharp throughout, and the wave works best during mid to high tide with rising tides preferred, picking up from 2 feet through 10 feet with head-high-plus conditions ideal. Southwest groundswells with east or east-southeast offshore winds deliver the cleanest waves, though the break functions across a broader range of conditions than many Indonesian reef peaks.

The spot emerged as a significant surf destination in the mid-1980s when Australian surfers first arrived and discovered it. Early development centered on a figure known as Boonga, who taught locals to surf and established annual competitions that grew into a formative part of Sumbawa's surfing culture. Today the break hosts World Qualifying Series events, with judge towers and an observation platform built into the bay specifically for competitions, anchoring Lakey Peak as part of the professional surfing calendar.

Lakey Peak sits in the village of Huu near Dompu on Sumbawa's east coast, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by road from Bima Airport, the nearest major entry point (roughly one hour by air from Bali). The area has evolved into the central hub for Sumbawa surfers, with five to ten other named breaks within easy reach, making it straightforward to sample alternative conditions when the peak is too crowded or inappropriate for a surfer's skill level.
