More about Kitchen Windows

Kitchen Windows is an A-frame reef and beach break where waves split and peel equally in both directions. The break is mellow and well-protected by the surrounding sandy bay, making it one of the more forgiving setups in Jeffreys Bay. Conditions favor southeast swell combined with westerly to west-northwest winds, with the spot firing most consistently from June through July during the Southern Hemisphere winter, when swells can run nearly double the size of summer months. Wave size rarely exceeds seven to nine feet comfortably. Beyond sharks and rips, the main hazards involve the rocky reef and sharp mussel shells that line the break.

Kitchen Windows has been surfed since the 1960s, traditionally serving as the nursery where most Jeffreys Bay groms learn to ride. The name traces back to Captain Jeffreys, who came ashore here during a scurvy outbreak in 1849, though the modern moniker reflects 1960s surfers who would watch the break from their kitchen windows. The spot has hosted local competitions, including stages of the Bloodscan Surf Series, and remains the primary training ground for junior surfers in the area.

The break sits near the center of Jeffreys Bay, within a short walk of several backpacker accommodations and coffee shops. Parking is abundant and free, making it accessible even during busier periods. The protected bay setting and proximity to town amenities have cemented its role as the entry point for most visiting beginners.
