More about Jug Handle State Beach

The break is a beach with a sand bottom that responds significantly to tidal shifts. A protected cove provides beginner-friendly waves when the tide is high and wind protection is better; higher tides also mean paddling out directly in the cove. As tide drops, surfers must navigate around rocks to launch beyond the cove, and the break becomes more challenging. West and northwest swells are the best, and mid-tide is generally optimal. The spot is known for an active blowhole that creates explosive wave activity in certain sections. Water clarity is excellent, with a gradual submerged sandbar allowing you to wade out over a hundred feet while staying at waist depth. The major hazard beyond rocks and cliffs is water temperature—the area requires a full 3/4 wetsuit minimum and booties.

Access is straightforward from a paved lot (30 standard spots plus 2 handicapped spaces) at mile marker 56.00 on Highway 1 near Caspar, situated between Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Two trail options lead to the beach: a shorter 100-yard walk with steep stairs, or a longer 300-yard route to an adjacent cove. The reserve itself spans 776 acres and was established in 1976, serving as a local beach on the Mendocino Coast. Parking during peak times can fill up due to limited capacity, and the ascent back up is challenging for those with mobility issues.
