More about Irita Hama
Irita Hama is a sandy beach break on the Izu Peninsula that responds best to southern swells with supporting west winds; east swells produce poor conditions. The central rock outcrop creates distinct left and right zones, with smaller, gentler days drawing beginners while larger swells produce hollow, barreling sections suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. The left side carries a pronounced rip current requiring careful attention.
The spot has limited documented surf history beyond its status as an established destination among Japan's Izu Peninsula breaks. It remains relatively uncrowded year-round, distinguishing it from heavily trafficked alternatives nearby.
Access is straightforward via the Izukyu Line to Shimoda Station (roughly 30 km south of Tokyo), followed by a 10-minute bus ride and 1-minute walk to the beach. Summer restrictions apply: from mid-July through August, lifeguards patrol 8am–5pm and segregate swimming and surfing zones, reducing break availability. Water temperatures range from around 15°C in winter to 25°C in summer, making year-round surfing feasible with seasonal wetsuits.
