More about Indian Beach
Indian Beach is a sand and cobble beach break north of Cannon Beach that works in both winter and summer. The waves peel as consistent left and right breaks over a sandy bottom interspersed with rocks; they tend to be mellow and approachable for beginners, though strong swells can provide shape suitable for intermediate surfers. The break responds best to southwest-directed swells combined with offshore winds from the east, with peak performance typically occurring around rising mid-tide. Winter months, particularly January, deliver the most reliable swell and clean conditions.
The beach lies within Ecola State Park beneath a striking headland of basalt formations and sea stacks. Winter storms and high tides periodically scour away sand layers, exposing rocks and creating a rougher paddle-out environment. Rips can form depending on conditions and the tidal cycle. The relatively sheltered exposure of the beach means you can find rideable waves during marginal periods.
Indian Beach is the only beach within Ecola State Park accessible directly by car, with parking available via the main access road. The location sits roughly 4 miles north of Cannon Beach proper and about 10 miles south of Seaside. Access requires an Oregon State Park pass.
