More about Imsouane (The Bay)
Imsouane Bay is a long, mellow right-hander breaking over sand and rock, capable of producing rides 600–800 meters in length during solid swell. In optimal conditions (1–2.5 meter face height), it offers forgiving, shoulder-rich waves suited to progression, while smaller swell (below 1 meter) reduces it to waist-high training walls. The break works best at low to mid tide with east winds coming offshore; at high tide the wave typically flattens, though the steeper Cathedral reef break on the adjacent headland can activate instead.
Surfers discovered Imsouane in the 1970s, decades after board-surfing first arrived in Morocco around Casablanca in the 1960s. The village has since grown into a primary destination for instruction and travel, though it lacks the major competitions or high-profile events associated with other Moroccan breaks.
The village sits approximately 90 kilometers north of Agadir on Morocco's southwest coast, at the mouth of a large bay that naturally extends incoming swells. Winter (November–March) brings the most consistent conditions and lightest winds, with Atlantic swells supporting wave heights from 1–5 meters depending on the swell pulse.
