More about Impossibles

Impossibles is a fast, hollow right-hand point break forming the eastern end of Jeffreys Bay's wave complex, where the reef tightens and creates the most powerful and most dangerous section of the entire break. The wave works best with mid to high tide and clean southwest swell between 4-8 feet, though it can handle larger swells. Light offshore winds produce the cleanest faces. This is an advanced-only section requiring intimate knowledge of the reef layout and recovery options, as the shallow reef demands precise line-ups and produces consistent injuries ranging from lacerations to bone breaks.

Impossibles has been surfed since the mid-1960s when local pioneers began exploring Jeffreys Bay, though the hollow sections like Impossibles were initially considered unmakeable by early surfers riding longer boards. By the 1970s, surfers like Terry Fitzgerald and later Kelly Slater demonstrated the technical possibilities of the break, with Fitzgerald spending two winters at J-Bay and establishing his reputation partly through sessions here. The section has remained notorious as one of the most treacherous and rewarding waves for elite surfers willing to accept the physical risk.

Impossibles sits roughly 65 km west of Port Elizabeth along the Eastern Cape coast, accessible via the N2 motorway. The break is part of the continuous point system centered around Da Gama Road and Supertubes, making it reachable from the town's main beach areas with standard public parking available near the general Jeffreys Bay beach zones.
