More about Ilha do farol

Ilha do Farol is an exposed beach break that receives a mix of groundswells and windswells, producing both left and right-hand waves over sand with scattered rock shelves. South swell combined with northwest offshore winds produces the cleanest conditions around mid tide as the water falls. Summer months tend to be flat, with May offering the most consistent waves. The break suits intermediate surfers and rarely becomes crowded despite having rideable surf.

The spot lies within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, an estuarine system east of Olhão. Access is by boat only—surfers park cars in Olhão city and take the ferry to Farol island roughly 7 kilometers offshore. The ferry timetable and weather conditions therefore govern when the break is reachable.
