More about Ikumi

Ikumi is a beach break characterized by a wide sandy bottom interrupted by a submerged reef toward the center of the beach. The break produces both left and right handers with the best conditions arriving on southeast-flowing swells combined with offshore winds from the west-northwest. The spot works across all tide stages but proves sensitive to swell intensity; while moderate swells create rideable waves, larger conditions tend to produce closeouts. Spring conditions, particularly in May, typically offer the most consistent clean windows.

The spot gained prominence on the international competitive calendar when it hosted the Billabong Pro Shikoku in June 2015, a WSL Qualifying Series 1,000-point event that marked the first co-sanctioned competition between the World Surf League and Japan Pro Surfing Association. The event drew regional competitors competing for ranking points on both tours.

Ikumi sits in Toyo, a small coastal town in Aki District within Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku's exposed southeastern coastline. Road access is straightforward via National Route 55, with parking, shower facilities, and restrooms available at the beach. The nearest significant airport is Kochi, approximately 57 kilometers away. The spot serves as a draw for surfers from the Osaka region who access it via overnight ferry service to Nanko.
