More about Huntington St.
Huntington Beach is a sand beach break offering both left and right-hand waves with shifting sandbars on either side of the Huntington Pier. The break works best on west-southwest swells with northeast offshore winds, and performs well at mid to low-mid tides. Winter swells from the west produce longer, peeling rights down the beach alongside steep lefts, while summer benefits from southwest swells. The northside of the pier features smoother, more beginner-friendly waves, whereas the southside develops steeper, more powerful waves and is occasionally shallow at high tide.
Huntington Beach has been surfed since 1914 when Hawaiian waterman George Freeth demonstrated the sport at the newly built pier. The area exploded in the 1950s and 1960s as a center of American surf culture, hosting the first U.S. Surfing Championships in 1959—an event that drew national attention when it was broadcast on television. The spot has hosted elite competitions for decades and remains one of the most famous surf destinations in California, anchoring the city's "Surf City USA" identity.
The beach has ample public parking at reasonable rates near the pier, with lifeguard presence and clear swimming protocols. Rip currents occur in the mid-channel area and require care; swimmers should shuffle their feet to alert stingrays, which are common in the water during warm months.
