More about Hungry

Hungry is a consistent reef break on the north coast of Tanegashima Island, best approached on low tide with east-facing swells. The break can produce clean, quality waves extending up to 200 meters down the reef face, making it capable of offering long rides during favorable conditions.

Tanegashima has the most consistent swell of any Japanese island thanks to its position and long shape, with warm water year-round. The north coast reef breaks, including Hungry, excel during typhoon season from August through November, when southern and southeastern swell fills in regularly. Outside those months, the break is accessible but less reliable.

Access is straightforward: the spot sits just south of Kanehama on the north coast, where a cluster of guesthouses and surf infrastructure supports extended stays. Kanehama Beach proper has parking, showers, and basic facilities nearby.
