More about Howrah Beach
Howrah Beach is a sheltered sandbar break that works both left and right, producing short, mellow waves ideal for beginners. Wave heights typically range from 1 to 2 meters, holding its shape best during winter and autumn, particularly in March. The break favors southerly swell with offshore winds from the north to generate clean conditions.
The beach stretches 1.2 kilometers along the Derwent River in the Howrah suburb of Hobart, positioned just inside Storm Bay at the mouth of the estuary. Access is straightforward—park at Wentworth Park and walk down to the beach, making it the closest organized surfing location to Hobart's city center at roughly 13 minutes' drive. The spot remains consistently uncrowded even when conditions are working. Pollution is a concern, typical of an estuary-fed beach system, and the area carries a low hazard rating overall.
