More about Horace Caldwell Pier
Horace Caldwell Pier is a sand-bottom break with twin bowls on either side of the pier structure that produce soft, forgiving waves ideal for riders developing their skills. The waves rarely barrel but offer multiple sections across sandbars that allow for extended rides. Wave size is generally smaller and less intense than breaks farther south along the Texas coast. Low to mid tide provides the best shape, with a rising tide often offering the cleanest conditions. Southeast swell combined with northwest offshore winds create the most favorable conditions, while winter months deliver the most consistent swell; the spot goes relatively quiet from late spring through autumn aside from occasional tropical storm systems.
The pier and adjacent breaks played a significant role in formalizing Texas's surfing community. After Hurricane Allen damaged the original structure in 1980, a rebuilt pier opened in 1984 and became the site of Texas's first sanctioned professional surfing competition, the Sundek Texas Classic. Port Aransas has since established itself as a major hub for competitive surfing through the Texas Gulf Surfing Association's regular contests and festivals that continue to this day.
The pier extends 1,200 feet from Port Aransas into the Gulf of Mexico and is directly accessible from town. Surfers should be aware of rip currents near the pier structure that can assist paddling out but require active effort to maintain position in the break; the spot also hosts typical Gulf hazards including sharks and jellyfish. The pier's close proximity to town makes it a practical option for day sessions and a popular training ground for developing surfers.
