More about Ho‘okipa

Ho'okipa breaks over a shallow reef with four distinct sections offering both left and right-hand waves. Pavilions on the eastern end favors right-handers with a shorter left, while Middles to its west typically lines up as a left. Point, on the western end, breaks right and has historically been the primary stage for windsurfing competitions. The reef bottom is sharp and unforgiving, making the spot strictly for advanced surfers. Smaller days may offer marginally more approachable conditions in sections like Lanes, but even these remain challenging. Winter swells from the North Pacific, ideally arriving on northeast swell windows with south wind, push waves into the three to fifteen-foot range, with occasional twenty-foot-plus faces during the October-to-March season.

Ho'okipa has been ridden since the 1930s, but its international reputation crystallized in the 1970s when the consistent trade winds and unobstructed reef profile established it as the windsurfing capital of the world. The Aloha Classic, professional board-sailing championship launched in 1979, became a regular venue and shaped the sport's competitive landscape through the following decades. Robby Naish, one of the era's dominant figures, won more wave contests there than any other competitor. The beach remains a testing ground for elite athletes and hosted Hawaii's inaugural state high school surfing championship in 2026.

Ho'okipa Beach Park sits on the Hana Highway east of Paia at Mile Marker 9. Public access is straightforward with free parking and observation decks overlooking the break, making it accessible to spectators. The beach park itself has basic facilities and provides views of both the water and the consistent onshore wind pattern that defines the spot's character.
