More about Honomanu Bay

Honomanu Bay is a reef and rock break producing both left and right-hand waves, with the main attraction being a peeling left on the western shore that faces east. Wave size typically ranges from head-high to double overhead. The lefts are most shaped by southwest to northwest winds, while the shorter right-hander on the eastern side works better with east to southeast winds. Winter offers more consistent swell, though the break is exposed to northeast trade winds that can roughen conditions. Rip currents run strong, especially in winter months, and the rocky and shallow reef creates hazards alongside the sharks the area is known for.

The bay sits in a steep-sided valley on Maui's northeast coast where the Honomanu Valley was historically a lush, inhabited area before its land use changed. Beyond this, I found no documented surf history—no records of notable sessions, competitions, or surfers specifically associated with Honomanu Bay.

Access is via the Road to Hana at mile marker 14.1, where a rough side road descends about half a mile to the beach. If you don't have four-wheel drive, park at the mile marker 14 pullout and walk in; the access road becomes muddy and impassable after rain. Parking near the bay is minimal, and you should lock your vehicle. The spot draws experienced local surfers and remains quiet, never crowded.
