More about Honoli‘i

Honoli'i is an exposed reef break that produces both left and right-hand waves over a bottom of boulder and coral, located just north of Hilo. The wave grows hollower and more hollow as the tide falls and typically ranges from waist-high to double overhead. Northeast swell combined with southwest offshore wind creates optimal conditions, particularly during winter months. The break is consistent and works at all tidal stages, though low tide produces the most powerful, steep sections. Hazards include the rocky bottom, sudden depth changes, and a notable rip current that intensifies where cold water from Honoli'i Stream meets the ocean. Water quality deteriorates quickly after heavy rain when stream discharge increases. The spot attracts intermediate and advanced surfers and is often crowded, with strong local presence.

Honoli'i has supported organized surfing for several decades, with the Quiksilver Big Island Pro-Am contest running since the 1980s as a major springboard for young surfers attempting to reach professional ranks. More recent competitions include the Boogie Fest youth event and the first BIIF surfing championship. Local surfers including state champions like Alex Ranne (longboard) have competed at the break.

The beach park lies two miles north of Hilo along Highway 19. Public access includes restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic facilities, with lifeguard presence from 9:30 AM to 4:35 PM daily. Parking is street-side with no dedicated lot, though overflow from high-use periods requires parking along nearby roads and walking to the beach. The Hele-On Bus system connects Hilo to the park.
