More about Honls
Honls breaks over an uneven reef in both directions, producing hollow, fast-moving waves that pick up well in summer, especially July. South-southwest swell combined with northeast offshore wind creates the best conditions; the break accommodates all tidal stages. Urchins and sharp rocks present underwater hazards, and stronger currents can develop during larger swells, making this an unsuitable break for beginners despite its year-round potential.
Tom Morey invented modern bodyboarding at this beach on July 7, 1971, crafting his first boogie board from foam scraps and a borrowed electric knife while living nearby. The birthplace of the sport gained wider recognition as bodyboarding exploded through the late 1970s and 1980s, and today the beach is formally acknowledged for this contribution to water sports history. Summer brings the annual Kona Roots Bodyboarding Contest, a free community event that honors both the sport's origins and local Hawaiian culture.
Access is straightforward along Ali'i Drive south of the main Kailua-Kona area. Street parking is available but require checking local signage for restrictions. Facilities include restrooms situated across the road from the beach and a grassy area with picnic tables overlooking the water.
