More about Holly Beach

Holly Beach is an exposed beach break that produces inconsistent left and right handers on a gently sloping shelf, requiring southern swell and northern wind to generate rideable conditions. When waves appear, they tend to be small and favor longboards. Winter offers the best windows for surfable conditions, though the broad continental shelf and Mississippi River silt deposition limit what swell energy can reach the shore—even in favorable months, clean waves occur only a small fraction of the time. Sharks are a documented hazard.

The Gulf Coast's emergence as a surfing destination in Louisiana is recent, with a core community of roughly eighty dedicated surfers developing over the past decade around previously unsurfed breaks. Holly Beach attracts some of this population despite its marginal wave quality, though competitive surfing or major historical sessions are not part of the spot's profile.

Holly Beach lies 12 miles west of Cameron along Louisiana Highway 82, perched on a chenier ridge above the Gulf. The community permits vehicle access directly onto the beach, with free parking available, though space fills during peak season. Accommodation ranges from RV parks with full hookups to seasonal rental cabins with amenities like fish-cleaning stations. The nearest town with consistent services is Sulphur, 40 miles inland, making Holly Beach a relatively isolated destination suited to anglers, shellers, and birdwatchers as much as the occasional surfer.
