More about Hoddevik
Hoddevik is a sand beach break on the Stadlandet peninsula near Selje that produces mainly left-hand waves. The break responds consistently to northwesterly swells with southeast winds providing optimal offshore conditions. Waves break well across all tidal stages and tend toward the softer, more mellow side compared to many European breaks, as Atlantic swells bend and lose some power navigating the fjord approaches. The spot suits both beginners and intermediate surfers, though the exposed position means conditions can turn volatile. Hazards include exposed rocks on the right portion of the beach and the powerful wind gusts that frequently sweep the area; winter water temperatures drop to 4–7°C while summer peaks around 13–17°C.
Hoddevik is recognized as one of Norway's premier surf destinations but I found no detailed historical record of when surfing first developed there. An annual Xwave competition runs through the X2 sports festival, drawing participants from across Norway and internationally. Visiting pros and sponsored surfers have trained at the nearby Lapoint Surf Camp facility.
The beach occupies the open western face of the Stadlandet peninsula between towering coastal mountains, about an hour's drive from Selje. Free parking is available at the beach access point. Hoddevik Strandcamp offers beachfront camping with facilities; wild camping is not permitted in the area. The beach remains relatively uncrowded despite consistent waves across the winter season.
