More about Hobuck Beach

Hobuck's beach break produces consistent lefts and rights on a sandy bottom that suit intermediate surfers and can accommodate beginners on smaller days. Best swells arrive from the west and southwest, with easterly winds providing offshore conditions that clean up the peaks. The break performs well year-round but peaks during winter, particularly January, when groundswell and locally-generated windswells arrive in equal measure. Mid to low tide typically works best. The beach stretches roughly a mile and a half along the Pacific edge of the Makah Reservation, rarely crowded despite decent consistency.

The Hobuck Hoedown paddle festival, launched in 2007, established the beach's reputation in regional water-sports culture by hosting one of North America's only judged sea kayak surfing competitions—drawing participants from as far as British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, and Texas. Summer brings youth surf camps, and local Makah surfers have built an ongoing presence in the lineup over decades.

Access requires a Makah recreational permit per vehicle and entrance via SR-112 into Neah Bay, then south to Hobuck Beach Road; parking and facilities are available at Hobuck Beach Resort. The site's remoteness and isolation—combined with reported shark and rip hazards—demand respect and awareness. Rough old-growth surroundings reinforce the sense of arriving at the Pacific Northwest's edge.
