More about Hermosa Beach Pier
Hermosa Beach Pier is a mellow South Bay beach break where the pier itself creates a faster, steeper alternative to the softer general beach. Both left and right-hand peaks form depending on swell direction. The break is highly sandbar-dependent, making quality variable—it tends to be less consistent and smaller than nearby El Porto. Best swells come from the southwest, and the spot works cleanest with easterly offshore wind and mid-to-rising tide; fall offers the most reliable conditions. Crowds are heavy, particularly in summer months.
Hermosa Beach has been central to Southern California surfing since the 1950s, producing some of the sport's foundational figures. David Nuuhiwa, recognized as one of surfing's all-time greatest surfers for his revolutionary noseriding technique and the iconic boards he rode, won the 1968 US Surfing Championships and cemented Hermosa's place in competitive history. Dale Velzy, another South Bay legend, became the first to sponsor surfers and democratize the sport commercially during the '50s and '60s. Greg Noll, the big-wave pioneer known as Da Bull, had his roots at Hermosa before gaining fame at Hawaiian breaks. The city continues to honor this heritage through its annual Surfers Walk of Fame and hosts longboard contests like the Hotdogger Championship that draw historic participation.
The pier creates a defined break structure with pilings that add hazard but also better wave formation on either side. Access is straightforward along the Hermosa Beach waterfront, though summer crowds and protection of the pier structure itself limit capacity.
