More about Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is a sandy beach break in the LA County South Bay that produces left and right handers on southwest to west swells, typically reaching 4–6 feet on solid days. The best conditions arrive on mid to rising tide with offshore east-northeast winds, creating glassy early-morning waves that deteriorate as afternoon westerlies pick up. It breaks as a beginner to intermediate wave, though the shorebreak intensifies and becomes hazardous during larger swells. The shore contains a 1,140-foot pier; surfers must maintain at least 100 feet clearance from its pilings as part of a hard restriction.

Hermosa Beach developed as a destination for surfing in the early 1900s and became known for attracting skilled shapers and board manufacturers. The International Surf Festival, established in 1962 to consolidate competing beach festivals from three South Bay cities, has become the region's primary surfing event, now in its sixth decade and expanding beyond surfing to include paddleboard racing, lifeguard competitions, and volleyball. The city maintains a Surfers Walk of Fame along the pier where notable local surfers are inducted annually with engraved bronze plaques.

Access is straightforward but parking fills quickly—metered street spots and city lots ($2–5/hour) are available but become scarce by late morning in summer. Hazards beyond the pier include rip currents that form near the pier structure during larger swells, stingrays in the water, and occasional poor water quality following heavy rain due to stormwater runoff; the county issues advisories periodically. Lifeguard towers provide supervision during peak hours.
