More about Hendaye

Hendaye is a sandy beach break with multiple peaks offering left and right handers across a seafloor of sand mixed with rocky patches. It handles westerly and northwesterly swell in the 1 to 4-meter range and works on all tides, though it performs best with southerly offshore winds. The break is mellow and forgiving for beginners, though rip currents form along the beach ends and near the Bidassoa river mouth at the north, while rocky sections near the southern end require caution. Winter months, particularly November, bring the most consistent conditions.

Surfing arrived in the Basque Country in 1956 and Hendaye became established early as a learning beach, developed alongside the region's emergence as a European surfing center. The beach became known as the most celebrated beginner destination in the French Basque Country. Local surfer Hugues Oyarzabal, known for documenting waves while surfing, represents the regional tradition. Just north of the main beach lies Vanthrax, a big-wave site tucked into the headland that only breaks in substantial swells and attracts experienced surfers seeking heavy barrels.

Hendaye is the last substantial beach in France before Spain, stretching as the longest sandy beach on the French Basque coast. Access is straightforward—parking lines the seafront, though summer crowds fill spots quickly, and several established schools operate there including Gold Coast, Onaka, Hendaia, and Txingudi, all with rental equipment and instruction for all ages. Bus connections link nearby towns to the beach.
