More about HB Cliffs
HB Cliffs is a soft, mushy sand-bottom beach break with waves in both directions that rarely close out even at larger swell sizes. It handles northwest swells in addition to the optimal west-southwest direction; during big northwest pulses the waves become heavy and dumpy but stay makeable throughout. The wave offers minimal push on small days but becomes playable at low tide with adequate swell. Water temperature averages 66 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
Huntington Beach's broader surfing heritage traces back to the 1920s with Duke Kahanamoku's visits, and the area has hosted the annual US Open of Surfing since 1959. HB Cliffs itself lacks a major competition history but serves as a quieter local break relative to the crowded scene at Huntington Pier.
The spot sits immediately north of Huntington Dog Beach between Seapoint Avenue and 21st Street, just south of Bolsa Chica State Beach. Access requires navigating rocky cliff debris including broken concrete and rebar at the base, making the walk-down more difficult than adjacent breaks. Summer parking near the dog beach area becomes severely congested.
