More about Hawks Nest
Hawks Nest-Mungo Brush is a beach break that works best with southeast swell and offshore west-northwest wind, peaking around mid-tide. The break produces waves that bend both left and right with a tendency to barrel, forming clean shoulders suitable for learners and intermediate surfers. The spot is most consistent during autumn and winter, particularly July, though it works only intermittently outside these seasons. On large swells the beach becomes very shallow, creating challenging and potentially hazardous conditions.
Hawks Nest sits in the Myall Lakes area north of Newcastle. The beach is accessed via Mungo Brush Road from Hawks Nest (approximately 25 km on sealed road) or from Bulahdelah via the Bombah Point ferry (unsealed portion, cash tolls). Parking is available at the Hawks Nest Surf Club on Booner Street and at the nearby Mungo Brush campground. The area is lightly crowded and offers a patrolled beach with a local surf club and year-round surf school. Strong rips are a persistent hazard, and shark sightings have been reported locally.
