More about Hanalei Bay

Hanalei's primary wave is a long right-hand point break running several hundred yards over lava reef, with the best conditions occurring during winter when northern swell combines with winds from the southeast. The Point is fast and hollow at overhead heights, requiring speed to negotiate the barrels. The bay also contains separate lineups: Pine Trees, favored by intermediate to advanced surfers, and the Bowl, a more powerful hollow wave for expert-level surfing. Low to mid tide is optimal, though rideable conditions exist across the full tidal range. Winter is the season of consistent waves, particularly January; summer flattens considerably.

Andy and Bruce Irons, among the most accomplished competitive surfers of their generation, learned to surf at Hanalei Bay on Kauai's north shore. They have hosted the Pine Trees Classic annually since 2000, a free youth event held at the bay that draws roughly 300 child competitors ages 5 to 12, including a "Keiki Push-In" category for the youngest participants with parents in the water. The Classic has become a cultural touchstone in Kauai's surf community, offering early-career surfers their first competition experience in a supportive, locally-anchored setting.

Hanalei sits as a two-mile half-moon bay with multiple beach access points. The main parking and facilities are at Waioli Beach Park, where bathrooms, outdoor showers, lifeguard stations, and campsites are available. The bay is exposed to hazards including strong currents, a large resident shark population, and seasonal crowds that intensify during winter swells. Experienced surfers are expected to navigate local etiquette, particularly on the Point wave, where some locals show little patience for inexperienced paddlers.
