More about Halfway House
Halfway House is a rocky beach break with both left and right-hand peaks, positioned along the Tijuana-Ensenada corridor. It performs best under southwest swell with northeast offshore winds, most consistent during October, though the spot remains temperamental overall—even in peak season, clean conditions occur roughly a quarter of the time. Wave size varies from waist-high to double overhead depending on swell; surfers typically choose longboards for smaller days and shortboards or step-ups when larger. The rocky substrate creates the primary hazard. Water temperature hovers around 15°C year-round, requiring at least a spring wetsuit. Despite its proximity to populated areas, the break rarely draws crowds.
The name Halfway House traces to the location's role as the sole freshwater source on the Tijuana-Ensenada route in the late 1800s. A cantina was established at the site in 1922, capitalizing on the isolated position between established towns. When the modern coastal highway opened in 1924, the establishment expanded to include a dining area; the original stone chimney from that era remains standing.
Access is straightforward via Mexico Federal 1 highway, positioned roughly 15 miles south of Rosarito. The nearest commercial airport serving the region is in Ensenada, about 27 miles away.
