More about Half Moon Bay - Westhaven
Half Moon Bay at Westhaven is a sandy beach break built over boulders that mainly peels to the left, typically producing waves from waist-high up to double overhead. The peak swell window runs from west-northwest, with east or southeast wind cleaning up the face most effectively; mid tide is the most forgiving stage. The break suits intermediate and advanced surfers willing to handle the cold water, powerful currents, and occasional rip channels that flow through the beach. Fall and winter bring the most consistent swell from North Pacific storm systems, though the spot works year-round.
Washington surfers began frequenting this coast in the 1960s, initially gathering further north at Point Grenville before eventually settling into Westport's protected harbor breaks. By the 1970s and 1980s, a distinct local scene coalesced around former Californians and transplants like Ricky Young, who moved to nearby Bellevue and started his own board brand. The area hosted regular competitions including the Polar Surf Challenge and the annual Ricky Young Classic (which ran through the early 2000s), along with the Clean Water Classic established in 2002, drawing regional surfers through its harshest seasons.
Access is via Westhaven State Park near Westport, a working fishing town located roughly 40 miles south of the Quinault Indian Reservation. The remote location and minimal infrastructure keep casual crowds thin. A Washington State Discovery Pass allows vehicle parking at the park; beyond that, few amenities exist nearby aside from Westport's restaurants and lodging a short drive away.
