More about Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay is a somewhat inconsistent beach break that primarily fires during spring and summer swell windows. It responds best to western groundswells with southeast offshore winds and rarely gets crowded. The break is influenced by reflective wave action from the nearby Pillar Point Harbor jetty, creating somewhat atypical conditions compared to straightforward beach breaks. Wave quality varies considerably and is workable at all tidal stages, though January typically offers the best consistency if you're patient enough to wait out longer stretches of mediocre conditions.
The Half Moon Bay area gained international surfing prominence not from its beach break but from Mavericks, a legendary big wave reef break just north at Pillar Point that was pioneered in the 1970s by local Jeff Clark. Jay Moriarity, one of the sport's most respected big wave surfers, became famous following his dramatic wipeout there in 1994. The Mavericks Invitational, held sporadically when winter swells deliver waves over 25 feet, has become big wave surfing's most prestigious contest.
Half Moon Bay State Beach offers three main access points with paid parking: Francis Beach (Kelly Avenue), Venice Beach (Venice Boulevard off Highway 1), and Dunes Beach (Young Avenue off Highway 1). Francis Beach tends to fill quickly. Free parking is available at Manhattan Beach's smaller 26-space lot. The beach is accessible via car, bike, walking, or public transit (samTrans route 17). Beyond the mentioned hazards of rip currents and sneaker waves, wet rocks along the shore can be dangerously slippery, and beachgoers are warned never to turn their backs to the ocean in this exposed location.
