More about Haleiwa

Haleiwa is a right-hand reef break formed by a distinctive V-shaped formation that reaches toward shore from roughly 300 yards out. The wave produces thick, powerful sections that can open into clean faces under ideal conditions, but deteriorates into a chaotic closeout section known locally as Toilet Bowl. A particularly strong and fast-moving rip current that channels across the outer reef complicates paddle-out and positioning. The break responds best to northwest swell with southeast wind, and works across all tidal stages, though conditions tend to be most manageable between low and high tide.

Haleiwa has been central to Hawaiian surfing for generations, originally ridden by Hawaiian royalty. Today it anchors the professional surfing calendar as the home of the Hawaiian Pro, the opening event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, an annual late-fall competition that attracts the world's top 128 surfers, typically held in early November. The break serves as both a proving ground for competitive professionals and a training arena for emerging Hawaiian surfers developing their skills in serious, fast-moving water.

The wave sits at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park, on the North Shore near the town of Haleiwa, accessed via a right turn off Kamehameha Highway just after crossing Rainbow Bridge heading into town. The park offers parking, restrooms, and showers, though weekend parking can fill quickly when conditions are good and crowds are high. Winter produces the most consistent, cleanable waves, with January typically offering the highest percentage of rideable days.
