More about Habitat 67
Habitat 67 is a standing wave on the Saint Lawrence River formed where fast-moving water hits underwater boulders in a depression on the river bottom. The wave typically stands between waist and overhead high, reaching up to two meters in favorable conditions. Optimal water flow is around 7,200 cubic meters per second; at higher flows near 7,900 the wave becomes steeper and more defined, while lower flows make it harder to catch. The break is rideable year-round and at any time of day, as water conditions persist regardless of tide or weather.
The wave presents a medium-to-advanced challenge distinct from beginner-friendly nearby breaks. Hazards include a powerful whirlpool immediately downstream, strong recirculating currents that require a long paddle back upstream through rapids, and underwater rocks. During winter months, ice chunks move down the river, adding to the hazard profile. The spot is close enough to shore for relatively safe entry and exit, though swimmers must be capable and confident.
The Montreal river-surfing community began in 2002 when Olympic kayaker Corran Addison first surfed the standing wave. Growth accelerated through formal instruction—Addison's Imagine Surfboards school taught over 3,500 students starting in 2005, while a rival school, KSF, began hosting roughly 1,500 students annually from 2003 onward. The number of local participants grew from fewer than ten original surfers to approximately 500.
Located on the artificial peninsula Cité-du-Havre in Lasalle, about 20 minutes from downtown Montreal, Habitat 67 sits at 2600 Avenue Pierre-Dupuy near the Marc-Drouin Quay and the landmark Habitat 67 housing complex from Expo 67. Public transit reaches the spot via bus route 777 from Jean-Drapeau or Bonaventure metro stations. Parking is available at nearby Parc de Dieppe and throughout the surrounding area.
