More about Gyongpo Beach
Gyongpo Beach is a sandbar break on South Korea's east coast near Gangneung, producing left and right-hand waves suitable for beginners. The break responds primarily to swell direction and wind rather than tidal movement—easterly swell arriving with westerly winds creates the best conditions, particularly during autumn months. Wave size is generally modest, though after winter the sandbars can shape into A-frame peelers. Rips and undertow present the main hazards when paddling out.
Gyongpo's place in Korean surf culture reflects the broader development of the sport in the country. Modern Korean surfing traces to the 1990s, with Yangyang on the same Gangwon-do coast becoming recognized as the epicenter of the movement, but Gyeongpo has emerged as one of the two premier sand-and-surf destinations on the east coast alongside Haeundae Beach in Busan.
The beach sits where coastal sediment created a sandbar mouth at Gyeongpo Stream, now separating Gyeongpo Lake from the East Sea. It lies roughly 6 kilometers south of central Gangneung and just 7 kilometers from Gangneung Airport, making access straightforward. A dedicated coastal cycling path runs through the area, and the nearby Gyeongpodae Pavilion serves as a local landmark.
