More about Gwithian

Gwithian is an exposed beach break that consistently holds swell year-round, with multiple peaks distributed across its wide sandy shore. It breaks in both directions on a sandy bottom with waves ranging from waist-high in smaller swells to overhead in good conditions. The most forgiving conditions occur at mid to low tide, when paddling is easier and the beach offers maximum space; high tide creates powerful dumpers and shoaling waves that narrow the beach. Peak swells arrive in winter, particularly around February. Best winds are east-southeast, and the break responds well to west-northwest swells, though it also accepts windswells. The break is recognized as one of Cornwall's most accessible surf venues for beginners, supported by an active presence of surf schools.

Access is straightforward via multiple paid car parks at The Towans, a three-mile sand system that also includes Godrevy and Mexicos beaches. The main Gwithian Towans car park holds around 350 vehicles and sits at the cliff edge above the beach; the smaller Godrevy car park to the north is popular with surfers accessing the quieter end. Several paths through the dunes connect to the Coast Path. Facilities include the Sunset Surf Café, beach shops, toilets, and a seasonal RNLI lifeguard service. Crowds are typical for a popular beach but remain manageable owing to the beach's length and number of peaks.

Rip currents present a genuine hazard and should be taken seriously. The beach also features shifting sandbars, a powerful shorebreak especially at high tide, and reef patches—one submerged between Gwithian and Godrevy, another in front of the lifeguard hut. Stay aware of water movements near Gwithian Stream and avoid venturing far north toward the rocks at Godrevy.
