More about Gwendrez
Gwendrez produces waves across a mixed setup of sand and rock reef. The beach break proper is best in the middle section where sandbars create shapely peaks, often with well-defined walls and speed. The southern end features a reef-based left-hand peeler that requires rocks to be the foundation. Swell arrives from the southwest through northwest directions with southwest being most consistent. Rising tide with low to mid tide start works best; northeast offshore winds provide clean, organized conditions. Difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly waves in the protected middle zones to intermediate and advanced breaks depending on swell size and tidal stage.
The exposed reef structure means currents shift the sandbanks seasonally, and tidal scour creates baïnes—deep holes that are sometimes barely visible and pose real hazard to swimmers. Wave size ranges from one foot during minimal swell to ten feet and beyond when solid Atlantic fronts arrive. The hollow channel at the launch point demands respect before reaching the more forgiving sandbars beyond.
Gwendrez sits along Route de Gwendrez in Plouhinec and holds a Blue Flag award for water quality. Parking is free and within a hundred meters of the beach, making access straightforward. Summer lifeguards and a rescue station cover July through August. The beach lacks the crowds found at more famous Breton breaks, and nearby cultural sites including the prehistoric Menez Dregan settlement and the small working port of Pors-Poulhan anchor the location in its landscape rather than treating it as pure tourist draw.
