More about Grupuk

Grupuk sits at the mouth of Gerupuk Bay and actually comprises multiple distinct reef breaks, each with different characteristics. The Inside break features a long, mellow right-hander over a shallow seagrass-covered reef that works reliably at all tides, making it the most accessible for intermediate surfers. The Outside breaks—referred to as Outside Left (Angry Lady) and Outside Right—are steeper and more demanding, with Outside Left known for hollow, fast walls and sharp takeoffs that can produce barrels, while Outside Right tends to be heavier with significant drops. Don Don in the middle of the bay offers a gentler A-frame alternative. All breaks require boat access from the village. Southwest to south-southwest swell works best, ideally combined with light offshore winds from the west-northwest. Mid-tide or higher tends to favor the longer walls, though Inside delivers in a range of tidal conditions. The sharp coral and black sea urchins scattered across the reef present the main hazards; many surfers wear reef booties as standard protection.

Surfing arrived at Gerupuk in the 1980s when Japanese adventurers were the first to explore the breaks. Local pioneers Edo and Kariadi subsequently opened the area to tourist surfing, and Surf Camp Lombok became the first foreign business established in the village. The spot developed into a regular teaching ground for Lombok's surf schools and remains one of the island's better-known breaks.

Grupuk lies in a small fishing village roughly nine to ten kilometers southeast of Kuta, a 15–20 minute scooter ride on paved road. The closest airport access is Lombok International, about 50 minutes away. Once in the village, surfers park at the harbor and hire a local outrigger boat (perahu) for access to the breaks, with the Inside peak typically a five to seven minute boat ride away.
