Grover Beach

Grover Beach is a wide sand-bottom beach break located roughly one mile south of Pismo Beach Pier in San Luis Obispo County. The break responds best to west and northwest swells with periods of at least 11 seconds, with northeast winds being most favorable. The waves generally hold best around high tide, with the south-facing sections offering mellower conditions and smaller waves compared to the northern end. Winter brings the most consistent swell, particularly in January, while summer produces smaller, more beginner-friendly conditions.

The beach receives less attention than nearby Pismo Beach, making it a quieter option for surfers seeking space. The southern sections are notably mellow and suitable for beginners, while the break itself is not considered exceptional compared to other Central Coast options. Waves break across a sand bottom for extended distances, providing multiple takeoff zones.

Grover Beach is one of the few Southern California beaches where vehicles are permitted on the sand, accessible via West Grand Avenue. A $5 day-use fee applies for vehicle access, though free parking is available behind Fin's Seafood Restaurant. The beach connects to a continuous 15-mile stretch of sand extending toward Oceano, and the area is part of Pismo State Beach, which is protected as a state park.
