More about Greenmount
Greenmount is a right-hand point break that forms part of the Gold Coast's famous Superbank system, with a sand bottom that produces long, peeling waves. The break is notably less intense and more user-friendly than its upstream neighbor Snapper Rocks, allowing riders to catch barrels in the upper sections before the wave mellows into long, rippable passages that can stretch for up to 200 meters. Wave heights typically range from waist-high to triple overhead, with the best conditions occurring when southeast swell meets south-southeast offshore winds, particularly during autumn and winter when august brings the most consistent waves. Unlike some other Gold Coast breaks, the quality of the surf is not significantly influenced by tidal changes.
Greenmount sits adjacent to the rocky Greenmount headland and has a long association with competitive surfing on the Gold Coast. The nearby Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1911, is among Queensland's oldest. The point itself became known locally through skilled operators from the 1970s onward, including Peter Townend, who won the first ISP/ASP World Surfing Championship in 1976. The area's proximity to Snapper Rocks, which hosts the professional Gold Coast Pro on the World Surf League Championship Tour, has kept it within Australia's competitive surfing landscape.
Access to Greenmount is straightforward, with the break positioned at the southeastern end of Coolangatta Beach and reached via Hill Street where the Greenmount Surf Life Saving Club provides substantial free parking. The area features public restrooms, shower facilities, and picnic grounds, with lifeguard patrols operating year-round. Primary hazards are rip currents and significant crowds when conditions are favorable.
