More about Greenhills
Greenhills is an exposed beach break with consistent swell exposure, breaking both left and right on a sandy bottom. It responds best to southern groundswell paired with northerly offshore winds, and is surfable at all tidal stages. Summer conditions often flatten out considerably, while spring through early October offers the most reliable waves. The northern section of the beach tends to receive smaller waves and stays relatively crowd-free, making it accessible for practice surfing, though the break can become heavy and hazardous during large south swell events.
Cronulla and the surrounding area have hosted organized surfing for over a century, beginning with the establishment of the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club in 1907. Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoko visited in the summer of 1914–1915, helping popularize the sport locally. The region produced several notable surfers: Bobby Brown dominated the 1960s before his early death, Peter Townend became world champion in 1976, and Mark Occhilupo won the world title in 1999 at age 33. Cronulla itself was later designated a National Surfing Reserve in recognition of its historical and cultural significance to Australian surfing.
Greenhills sits at the northern end of the Cronulla beach complex approximately 18 kilometres south of Sydney's city center, accessible via Gate 5 at Wanda Reserve on Mitchell Road. Free parking is available nearby at Don Lucas Reserve, though it fills quickly on weekends. The northern stretch of beach remains unpatrolled by lifeguards and is notably less developed than neighboring sections, with minimal facilities and few crowds. Hazards include strong rip currents, variable water quality, and shark presence common to the area.
