More about Great Western
Great Western breaks both left and right over sand, offering manageable waves suitable for developing surfers. The beach faces northwest and benefits from Atlantic swell, particularly during winter storms when southwesterly winds keep other breaks blown out. The tidal range is significant—at high tide the beach nearly vanishes, but at low water it expands considerably and merges with adjacent beaches. The sand bottom provides a more forgiving environment for learning.
British surfers first discovered Great Western in the 1960s, and the break has remained a cornerstone of UK surfing culture for over six decades. The beach marked its 60th anniversary of active surfing with competitions featuring foamies, bellyboards, and longboards. It gained further recognition as the site of a world record attempt to get the most surfers on a single wave, attracting over 100 participants.
Great Western sits in a cove between Towan and Tolcarne beaches, accessed via cliff-side steps from Tolcarne Road rather than direct beach-level parking. The nearest car parks lie at Newquay train station or Albany Road, requiring a short walk or descent to reach the sand. Full facilities including toilets, cafes, and board hire are available at the clifftop; at mid-to-low tide, beach-hopping to Tolcarne or Towan offers an alternative approach.
