More about Good Harbor Beach

Good Harbor Beach breaks as a sandy beach with consistent left and right-hand waves over a rock-and-sand bottom. The break works best with northeast swell, preferring northwest offshore winds, and typically performs around high tide. Winter swells push waves into the 3-6 foot range, while summer offers smaller 1-3 foot peaks. The difficulty is intermediate to advanced; waves often close out but can provide good sections when organized, working best for shortboards in larger conditions and longboards when smaller. The break is relatively uncrowded even on good days.

Good Harbor has developed an active local surfing community in recent years. The beach hosted a regional competition organized by UMass Amherst's Surf Club, drawing competitors from across New England, which generated significant local interest in the break.

Good Harbor Beach sits on Thatcher Road in East Gloucester, north of Boston via Route 128. Parking is paid for non-residents, and from late May through early September reservations are required up to 10 days in advance through the Blinkay app. The lot gates open at 8 am and close at 9 pm, and the lot fills quickly on sunny days; early arrival is recommended. Surfing is allowed outside lifeguard hours (after 5 pm or before 9 am during summer). Restrooms and food concessions are available.
