More about Gavres

Gavres is a sand-bottomed beach break on an L-shaped peninsula between the Lorient harbour and Plouhinec. The spot is heavily sheltered by the nearby Île de Groix, which blocks most swell from the south and southwest, making it an inconsistent break that comes alive only when swell angles more toward the north. The Grande Plage side receives less consistent waves but is well protected from westerly winds, while the Linès side tends to deliver more reliable shape. The beach spreads wide enough to accommodate multiple peaks, and rides work best on mid to high tides with light to easterly winds.

Gavres has been an established learning ground since at least the mid-2000s, when the West Surf Association began developing surfing infrastructure in South Brittany. Multiple surf schools operate from the peninsula and nearby Plouhinec, including lessons for children, making it part of the casual teaching circuit rather than a destination for advanced progression or notable competitions.

The peninsula sits 6 km of sandy beach from Plouhinec, backed by vegetated dunes in a relatively exposed coastal setting. Strong tidal currents flow through the area, requiring respect from swimmers, though supervised bathing is safe in summer months. A few rocks appear at low tide and merit caution, but the wide sandy beach allows paddlers to avoid them easily. Parking and access are straightforward from the surrounding seaside communities.
